Gulmarg vs Auli

Two ski resorts, two kinds of trip

If you want India’s biggest ski mountain — natural snow, open bowls and a gondola that climbs to nearly 4,000 metres — Gulmarg is the one. Auli is the gentler, more managed resort in Uttarakhand.

What Gulmarg is for

Nothing here is groomed into a motorway. You get tree skiing when it storms, bowls when it clears, and roughly 900 vertical metres between the top of the gondola and Kongdori. There are no hour-long lift lines. The season runs December to March, about two hours from Srinagar airport.

Beginners do well on the village slopes with lessons. The upper mountain and anything off-piste is big terrain, and it asks for a guide when you’re unsure.

When Auli is the better fit

Choose Auli if you want a smaller, more managed hill and a shorter trip from the plains, with skiing that stays closer to marked runs. Choose Gulmarg if you want deep natural snow, the gondola, and the option of off-piste or a Kashmir week after the skiing.

A week of lessons, rentals and guiding in Gulmarg starts from ₹28,000 — a fraction of the Alps or Japan.
